Abstract:

Three diaries (1851,1854,1854: some dated entries) and personal correspondence of Gold Rush miner, Charles van Houten, describing his travels from Sunbury, Ohio to Marysville, Calif. via Panama and experiences in California. Diaries provide details of travel, costs, dates of departure and arrival at various stops, money and gold nuggets sent home, and gold miner life such as his tent being invaded by Indians who drew arrows on him, smallpox raging all around, a murdered miner's body found, and the hanging of an Indian. Also includes four Adams & Co, Express bonds (two made out to Peter R. Van Houten). The bulk of the correspondence is between Charles Van Houten and Miss Harriet (Hattie) Jones who eventually marry. Includes their marriage certificate (Jan. 6, 1857 ) signed by minister Stephen Fant. Also includes correspondence (3 letters) of Rev. P. (Peter) R. Van Houten from Galena, Ohio [i.e. Rarden, Ohio], one addressed to brother Charles and two as the recipient from David Groesbeeck (New York, N.Y.) with accompanying printed material regarding Dutch heirs in a land dispute with Trinity Church of New York City titled: 'To the heirs of Anneka Jantz [sic] Bogardus."
